Green Flag Award - 31/03/2020

Green Flag Award

We are now officially an Eco School.  Here are the Eco Warriors and Bill Esterson MP during our Green flag ceremony in February. Mrs McIver was also joined by Val Talbot from Friends of Crosby beach and Suzanne McCumiskey from Green Sefton.
Here is the article which Mr Esterson sent to the Sefton Bubble.

Mr Esterson said the award was well deserved following staff and pupils' hard work in the school and the wider community. He said " The school has shown a huge commitment to environmental issues and the passion was clear to see.  The school has an Eco Warriors group, who are voted for by their peers, and they encourage classmates to get involved in a wide range of projects, like beach cleans and energy saving.  I know from visiting schools across the constituency that young people are our best advocates for tackling climate crisis, and Ursuline are certainly doing their bit"

Eco-schools empower pupils, raise environmental awareness and improve the school environment. In the UK there are 19,863 schools registered with the programme, with just 1,207 having achieved Green Flag Status.

Representatives from "Keep Britain tidy" assessed the school for the Green Flag Award. Keep Britain Tidy's Karyn Fullerton wrote "I would like to congratulate you all for all the time and effort that has been invested in environmental education at your school. Your award is well deserved and reflects the hard work you have put into the programme."

Assessor Francis Hyland, who visited the school, commented." It was a privilege to assess your school and I could see how hard Mrs McIver and her various Eco Committees have been working on environmental issues for many years.  I was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of actions that have been completed and was particularly impressed by how Mrs McIver, the committee and Ursuline had strived to involve the whole school and its community.  A massive thank for an inspirational visit and a further thanks for litter picking on one of the best beaches in England, improving thousands of visitor's experiences."

Eco Co-ordinator Lucy McIver said she was proud of the work of the Eco Warriors.  She said" The children have been involved in recycling and energy saving projects for many years.  They have planted bulbs in Alexandra Park with the support of Green Sefton.  The school council has also been involved in the refurbishment of Blundellsands and Crosby Train station.  Their art work can be seen displayed on the subway under the station."

The school has also regularly taken part in the Crosby and Waterloo in Bloom competition.  Last year they held a 'fairy garden' competition and the exhibits were showcased as part of the garden competition.

The school has also organised beach cleans once a month and the parents and families have been very supportive getting involved and recognising the importance of keeping Crosby Beach clean.

Lucy McIver also said " I would like to thank all our amazing past and present Eco Warriors, as well as all the other children, the staff, the fabulous PTFA and supportive parents. Thank you also to Anne- Marie Clegg from Sefton Council, the Friends of Crosby beach group and Green Sefton who have always offered invaluable support."
